Skardu is the capital of Skardu district in Gilgit Baltistan. Skardu is located in the 10 kilometres (6 miles) wide by 40 kilometres (25 miles) long Skardu valley at the confluence of the Indus and the Shigar River.
Skardu is situated at an altitude of nearly 2,500 m (8,200 ft). The
town is surrounded by grey-brown coloured mountains, which hide the 8000 m high peaks of the nearby Karakoram range. Skardu is the name of the city and the name of the district too. The Skardu district includes the beautiful valleys of Baltistan There are 5 valleys of Baltistan Skardu ,Shigar,Khaplu ,Kharmang and Rondu. Skardu valley is the most beautiful valley of
Pakistan in terms of its landscapes.There are variety of natutural beauty in Skardu from cold desert to
the highest plateaus. One can never find such a place on earth where
nature can be seen at one place.

Desoai National Park
Deosai National park is located 30 km south of Skardu city. The plateau is 2nd highest on earth after Tibet. One can reach deosai by jeep it takes 1 hour to reach deosai top. Deosai is the majestic place. It is the home of the rare Himalyan Brown Bear and other species which include Markhor, Urial, Snow cock ,vulture and ibex. Although there are many lakes in Deosai but Sheosar lake is the largest lake.

2. Upper Kachura and Shangrila Lake
About 32 km (20 miles) from Skardu and 2 hours by jeep lies the
shimmering peaceful deep Shangrila lake also called lower Kachura Lake,
teeming with brown trout. During spring many exotic and colourful
flowers adorn its banks, while peach, apricot and apple trees are laden
with blossoms in April. Later in the summer one can taste the apples,
which are a particularly delicious variety. Upper Kachura lake is located above Shangrila resort. It is large than shangrila lake. The interesting fact is that neither water goes out from the lake nor water comes from any stream. But it is said that there are many springs inside the lake.
